A Qualitative Study of Baseline Urban and Rural Middle Level Science Teacher and Student Views on Engineers and EngineeringEmily Paige Driessen, Ashley Dunn, Kameisha Sallah, Jennifer Wilhelm, & Merryn Cole
pp. 559-578 | Article Number: ijese.2018.051
Abstract This qualitative study investigated how Urban and Rural middle level science teachers and their students understand engineering. Four teachers (two from an Urban school and two from a Rural school) and their respective student populations were examined. Our data included student Views of Nature of Engineering (VNOE) survey, the Draw an Engineer Test (DAET), and teacher and student interviews. The interviews showed all teachers believed there were differences between science and engineering. However, the majority of the teachers did not differentiate between the two subjects in their classrooms. Student interviews showed Urban students, overall, had more ideas of what engineering is than Rural students, and most students (Urban and Rural) tended to distinguish between science and engineering. The VNOE revealed more Urban students than Rural claimed engineering combines all subjects, while more Rural students than Urban described engineering as a subject that involves creating, designing, and inventing. The DAET showed the majority of both Urban and Rural students drew an engineer with an inferred action categorized into the making/fixing/working with hands category. Overall, students and teachers, from both populations, held incomplete understandings of engineers and engineering. Design, Application and Evaluation of a Technological Instrument about Environmental EducationJosé María Fernández Batanero, Miguel María Reyes, & Rocío Piñero
pp. 579-588 | Article Number: ijese.2018.052
Abstract The aim of the present work is to provide the results obtained in the suggested study about the design, application and evaluation of a technological-educational instrument capable of increasing awareness and environmental attitude in high school students. The method used was a pretest-posttest experimental design, for which a total sample of 294 students from Seville (Spain) were selected. Among the results drawn, there was a significant increase in awareness and environmental attitude. It was concluded that technological instruments that favour learning in Environmental Education must be designed. Designing a Local Organizational Unlearning Model Emphasizing the Underlying FactorsMahdieh Amani, Ali Shirazi, Alireza Khorakian, & Gholamreza Malekzadeh
pp. 589-604 | Article Number: ijese.2018.053
Abstract The purpose of localization is to match the theories in order to present a better explanation of phenomena associated with the land of formation and existence of the phenomena being studied. Using this method, some theories can be examined and retested in the context of their social, cultural, religious, and economic affairs, and make changes in order to a better explanation of phenomena being studied, if it is required. This research is aimed at designing and explaining the unlearning local model in model farmers in the Khorasan-e-Shomali Province to achieve the dimensions and components of underlying factors. In order to achieve this, based on the theoretical sampling principle, 17 interviews with model farmers and experts of the Education Department of Jahad-e-Keshavarzi Organization of the Khorasan-e-Shomali Province were carried out. The carried out analysis using MAXQDA software and through the continuous comparison method in the actual and theoretical coding process showed 300 codes, 42 concepts and 6 categories that led to the emergence of a final research model focused around the core category, called organizational memory retrieval. The related model refers to causes, correlated factors, intermediary factors, suitability and respective results of the core category of research. In general, this study is proposed the effective variables to unlearning in the land if agricultural activities, especially the replacement of traditional irrigation methods with modern methods for optimal use of water resources, in the form of a model with an apparent approach. In this research, a local unlearning organizational model is presented for the first time. Abstract This paper describes how researchers and teachers have developed ways of embedding the ‘SATELLITES’ geo-science and technology education program into K-12 classrooms, to enhance science teaching and learning. SATELLITES (Students And Teachers Exploring Local Landscapes to Interpret The Earth from Space) is a professional development program aimed at enhancing hands-on science and technology education in a wide range of thematic areas, including Earth and Space Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Biology and Physics. Since the Program’s beginning in 1998, hundreds of teachers have attended intensive summer professional development Institutes in Earth Science and Technology content, project–based learning (PBL), and student inquiry. By leveraging the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Program’s outreach and education resources, thousands of students from across the US and several other countries have participated in SATELLITES. The assessments performed on the efficacy of the program have clearly showed a positive change in teachers’ level and quality of knowledge in geo-technologies and related natural sciences and in students’ engagement in science and comprehension of science concepts. The experience gained throughout the program’s long life has allowed the development and implementation of guidelines and recommendations to address emerging challenges. These experiences, together with the effective overall performance of the program create an important potential to expand its impact, by building capacity in more areas of the country or in other countries, where geospatial technologies have not yet been systematically introduced in the school environment. Abstract Background: Maintaining an upright posture is an important and complex task for the human body because it involves the alignment and control of various parts of the body. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between postural deviation of shoulder protrusion (SP) and different neuromuscular variables in subjects who practice strength training (ST). Method: Twenty-two individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 years, and who practiced strength training, participated in the study. The individuals underwent postural assessments, using a photographic record in the sagittal and frontal planes, in which the SP level was noted. Strength was assessed via the one-repetition maximum test and flexibility was assessed by means of a goniometric test. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Correlation (α<0.05). Results: The present study did not find any significant relationship between SP and different neuromuscular variables in subjects practicing ST, indicating that being stronger or more flexible does not influence such deviation. Conclusion: It is important for future studies that assess this population to include aspects in their assessment tests that are unrelated to sports and training.
